Canadian Wins at World Series of Poker Event

Toronto, Canada, June 16, 2015 – Refund Management Services (www.RefundManagement.com), the number one choice for the biggest Canadian and non-U.S. winners for U.S. gaming and casino tax refunds, is weighing in on the start of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) tournament in Las Vegas and Canadian Sam Greenwood’s win of $318,977, making him the first Canadian to win a WSOP event this year.

On Wednesday, May 27, the 46th annual World Series of Poker, the world’s largest poker tournament, officially got underway in Las Vegas, Nevada. Many players have already tasted success, including Sam Greenwood of Toronto, who won his first WSOP bracelet and became the first Canadian winner in the 2015 event, winning $318,977 from Event #22, $1,000 no-limit hold’em. “Throughout the eight-week event, there will be 68 individual tournaments,” says Brooke Sacks, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at Refund Management Services. “While players from all over the world will be in attendance, it didn’t take long for a Canadian to break through with a win.”

To achieve victory, Greenwood had to best a field of 1,915 runners. All entries created a prize pool of $1.7 million, but only the top 197 places received a portion of the money. Another Canadian, Jay Dragland of Calgary, Alberta, broke the top 10 with his ninth-place finish, earning him $23,387.

“While these wins are big, it’s important for Canadians and many other players visiting the U.S. for the World Series of Poker tournament to remember that winnings over $1,200 are considered taxable income by the IRS and are subject to a 30% withholding tax,” Sacks concludes. “As Canada’s most reliable and experienced gaming, casino, and poker tax refund providers, Refund Management Services can help Canadians and other non-U.S. residents who have won a substantial amount of money at the World Series of Poker recoup some or all of their withheld winnings.”
